Conversations with Porter

Porter has a new fascination with the body which has led to him saying some funny things and us having interesting conversations. He always wants to know what his body is going to benefit from the food he is eating. So for example i tell him the carrots are going to help his eyes see better and milk will help his bones be strong. He asked me what some junk food does and i told him it did nothing but make people fat. So now i have a three year old that tells you that McDonald's makes you fat. Also if i tell him that he can only have one cookie he will respond by saying " so i don't get fat mommy?" I really did not want to make my three year old boy anorexic of obsessed with what he eats but what are you to say when they want to know how french fries or ice cream help their body? So we have talked about how some food is called junk food and it tastes yummy and we can eat it some of the time but not all of the time.

He is also really interested with the exteriors of our bodies. He has asked me things like how the Dr fixed my tummy after getting the baby out. This was one time it would have been easier if had gotten a c-section since then the baby did come out of the tummy and you have a scare to prove it! I told him the baby didn't come out that way, they came out of my vagina. He said "oh" and that was that. I was glad he didn't ask for any more details on that!

Since we have all boys in the family, besides me, he also asked me one day how i go Pee since i don't have a Penis ( he had been asking how boys and girls were different). Apparently he correlates the two words.. you know so Pee-nis because you use it to Pee. He seemed really concerned i don't have one.

Breastfeeding has started a whole new discussion about woman and men and the difference. He asked me if his Nana could feed Preston since she was a "lady" ( no idea why he used that word) and therefor had breasts. Try explaining menopause to a three year old. Twas interesting. He also asked why his dad couldn't breastfeed the baby, to which i replied he had no breasts. Porter lifted up his shirt and showed me his nipples and said that boys did have breasts. I explained they just had the nipple part but not the breast part that makes the milk. This whole conversation took place about a week ago. So this morning I hear porter in the other room explaining to Theo that he couldn't feed babies because he only had "nickles". It would be hard to feed a baby with a nickle don't you think??

Porter: mommy how tall am i?
Me: you are three feet three inches
Porter: No, I don't have three feet i only have two. Don't you know that i only have two feet mommy?

Tag

I was tagged from a friends blog and decided to actually do this one since its almost my anniversary anyways and then you can know all about Cory!

What is his name? Cory Joseph Nelson. Also known as Papi from the kiddos.

How long have we been married? 5 years coming up on October first.

How long did we date? first date was January 25 2003, got engaged in June 2003 and after a rocky on again off again summer we got married October 1, 2003.

Who eats more? hmmm probably me since i am home all day walking past the pantry! Cory can get away with eating more junk though, dang what i would do for his metabolism!

Who said I love you first? Cory did. We used to say things like " I love you 75 %, like you 25 %" I think it started with me wanting to know how much he liked me. It ended up being an inside joke and the one day he told me he loved me 100%.

Who is taller? Cory by a long shot.. he is 6' and i am only 5'2 and a half... yes the half counts!! Sometimes i tell people i am 5'3 but then I look like a liar if they are really 5'3 and taller than me. When Cory and I were dating i always wore 3-4 inch heels so he thought i was taller at first because my jeans covered my big shoes up. I think he was a little surprised and disappointed when he came over once and i just had socks on!

Who sings better? Cory. I like to listen to him sing. I wish i could harmonize as easily as he can!

Who is smarter? Me of course! lol.. I think we have our separate areas of expertise.

Whose temper is worse? Mine, or i should say i just lose my temper more often! I think when Cory is actually mad his is just as bad as mine!

Who pays the bills? Me. I am the one obsessed with money and NOT spending it! So I am a bit of a control freak about it and have to be in charge so as to not have a constant panic attack!

Who does the Laundry? both of us, although Cory doesn't ever put it away so if it ever gets folded or hung up its my doing.

Who cooks dinner? Me, Cory is good at picking up fast food if i cant cook! He is not the greatest cook, or really any sort of cook. He can make a sandwich or cold cereal.

Who drives when together? Cory does. So that i can put on my make up on the way there since I never get around to it until the last second!

Who is more stubborn? me!

Who is first to admit when wrong? Hmmmm well i am never wrong!! and Cory doesn't seem to think he is either. So i would say neither of us, we just agree to disagree eventually and I am a forgeter so even if i am really mad after a day I am back to acting like nothing happened even if he doesn't say he was wrong.

Who wears the pants in the family? Cory would hate to hear me say this, but I think i do! Although its getting more even the longer we are married.

Who mows the lawn? Well we live in a townhouse so they mow the lawn for us! If we had a house i would make Cory do it though!

Who kissed who first? I kissed Cory first, well that is to say i tried to kiss him and he backed away!! He said he didn't realize what i was doing. Anyways then a few minutes later when he understood what i was going for we kissed, and i think it was a mutual kiss at that point.

Who asked who out first? I gave him my number, and he called me the next day.

Who proposed? Cory proposed to me in June. BUT he called off our engagement later in the summer and we were just dating again. In September I was sick of it so gave him the ultimatum. Either we got married or we broke up for good... We got married one week later from that day.

What is my favorite thing about him? How he is with our boys. I seriously had no idea when i married him he would be so wonderful with children! He is so patient and tender. I also love when he sings.

I tag EVERYONE who reads my blog!

Preston Pictures

Who doesn't love a little new born snuggle? I love how their little legs curl up by their bum and they just fall asleep in your arms. I absolutely adore this stage and am soaking every moment in.

Theo is fascinated with Preston, especially his face. He always wants to touch his eyes and mouth. We have to keep a close eye on this so that he doesn't hurt him accidentally! Theo has not shown any jealousy though, just curiosity.

Look he is the same size as my book. ( Breaking Dawn, the last book in the vampire series)
hehehe.. a face only a mother could love! This picture was so bad its good!
Don't worry he is really cute. Here he is one week old.

Birthing adventures

Okay, here it is.. my way to long birthing story! Preston and I are finally home and doing well.

We arrived at the hospital at 10:30 ( of course we were late.. it was not my fault. I am the on time spouse) After an hour of checking in and filling out some more paperwork and then sitting in the room bored we finally got things going. The midwife said we would insert cervadil and hope that within 12 hours i would be in full blown labor. We put that in at noon. At first I just read my book ( Breaking Dawn, the latest book in the twilight series that just came out on the second) while Cory read some manual for a football video game. They don't advise you to move the first two hours after you get it inserted or i would have been trying to keep moving! The contractions started right away and over the next two hours built up till they were 1-3 minutes apart and pretty uncomfortable to be sitting still in the bed! The nurse kept coming and checking me and asking me about an epidural. I kept telling her no.. i mean i was barely even doing anything and not in pain! She was annoying. I told the midwife later on and she magically was not my nurse the rest of the labor. Thank goodness! Anyways the midwife came back and checked me at 2:00pm because I was having such hard frequent contractions she wanted to see what was up. I was dilated to a 4. His head was -3 position and floating. She said she could push it and would float up. She did decide though that i was officially in labor and that i could now get up if i wanted to.

I paced in the room for a bit stopping during the contractions and doing hula hoops with my hips to help open my pelvis. After a while I rested on the ball and kept reading my book leaning over the bed. Soon Cory decided we should watch a movie and I agreed as i was having a hard time reading because i lost my place each contraction. About 6:45 the midwife checked me again and I was 5 1/2 cm. Baby still was high in a -3 station and posterior. I was a little annoyed but not really surprised things were going so slow. At least I was moving along, but I figured i was in for another 24 hour labor at this rate. Oh and she took out the cervadil and said if in a few hours i had not progressed again then they would start the pitocin, but she thought my body would continue to progress on its own. I told the midwife that if i stalled out at an 8 again i wanted the epidural, as i was already tired and couldn't stand the thought of being at an 8 in the wee hours of the morning for hours while on pitocin and then have to have the baby turned manually. They sent in someone from anesthesia to talk to me about my low blood pressure and the epidural. My blood pressure at the time was 80 over 40's and they were a bit concerned about it. It was decided that if i got the epi later that I was to have fluid before to bring up my level to closer to 100/60 and also they would just give me a half dose in hopes it wouldn't be as hard on me.

An hour later about 8 pm I sent Cory down to get dinner. While he was gone the contractions got a little more uncomfortable and i called him about 8:40 and told him to come back because i didn't want to be alone anymore! He came back and we decided to call our moms so they could know nothing was going on and just go to bed. We called my mom first and of course she reacted " only a five??!" Which just annoyed me because its not my fault and I wasn't trying to just annoy everyone with my slow labors! Cory's mom reacted the same way. Of course it had been a while since i was checked but i figured i was most likely only a 6 now. After he got off the phone with my mom the nurse came in. I told her I was having a harder time breathing through the contractions and that I thought I might take some fentinol (spelling?) in the next hour or so for a little break. She took me off the monitors so i could move around for 30 minutes to go to the bathroom and walk around. Said she would be back at 10 to check on the baby's heart and if i wanted the meds she could give it to me then if i went back on an IV. Right after she left i told Cory i didn't want to be on the IV that i thought i would wait till later.. when i was dilated to an 8 and just get the epidural. We figured that would be around midnight to 2 am ish. I went to the bathroom and Cory called his mom to tell her the not so news that i was still no where close to a baby. I came back out and sat on the ball and had a really hard contraction. Cory was chatting away with his mom, i told him to get off the phone! He told me that was rude that we talked to my mom longer and could talk to his mom if he wanted. Another strong contraction hit and I started yelling at him to hang up the phone and help me already! He hung up and kept complaining to me how i never let him talk... I started crying that i couldn't have this conversation right now i was in labor. He seemed to think it odd that 10 minutes earlier i was just fine. I gave up on him believing me and paged the nurse. Cory told me to wait as she would be back in 10 minutes anyway but i couldn't wait that long. She walked in to me crying through a contractions saying i couldn't do this and please just give me the fentinol. In my head i was thinking i was such a wuss.. only 5 cm and i couldn't even handle it! But I didn't care. She went to get the midwife who upon walking in and seeing me try to deal with a contraction insisted she check me before we did anything. I got on the bed and had the worst ever contraction laying down while she checking me. The good news i was a 7 so at least all the pain wasn't for nothing. The bad news was baby was only -2 station and still not engaged. His head was still floating!! Darn baby was so stubborn. I got hooked up an IV and by 10:10 she gave me the Fentinol. At this point i decided that I was way too tired and this baby was so high and posterior so I wanted to get the epidural so i could sleep some and then labor more in the morning. The nurse went to get the Epidural guy. While she was gone I flipped over to hands and knees leaning on the birth ball on the bed. I rocked my hips with the contractions. They felt manageable for about 10 minutes.. then I was struggling through them again and wondering why this fentinol didn't help longer!

The Epidural guy finally showed up at 10:30. Cory left because he will pass out if he is in the room. The man asked me a bunch of questions which i answered as quickly and shortly as i could. Then they had me get into position which is sitting on the edge of the bed leaning over so my spine is a c curve. The midwife was holding my hands and the nurse was holding the heart monitor on the baby. The minute i got into this position from the hands and knees something felt weird. I felt like I needed to poop. I was mortified that I was going to right there in front of the young good looking epidural man. I didn't say anything and tried my hardest to relax while he sponged my back down and then gave me the numbing shot. By then I felt like my body was pushing on its own. It never occurred to me it could be the baby, i was just checked and only a 7 with a head floating! He started to put the catheter into my spine. I tried to stay still as best i could. He asked me if i could feel it in my right or left hip. I said i couldn't tell because all i felt was pain in my back and legs and like i needed to push. The midwifes eyes got all big and she asked me how i felt again. I told her I felt pushy and I couldn't stop it. She had the nurse get up and hold my hands while the Epidural guy taped down the catheter and she put on some sterile gloves. I laid down and she checked and I was a 10 with bulging bag of waters! This was only 45 minutes of so from me being a 7! That is really insanely quick for me and no one expected it. I sat back up because laying down was awful.. The epidural guy went ahead and put the medicine in since i was all ready prepped for it. He said i would feel my legs going numb in the next 15 minutes or so. ya, so helpful at the moment! They were trying to find Cory while I tried not to push. I was doing little pushes anyways because i couldn't help it. It felt so good to push. They ended up paging Cory who had gone all the way down to Starbucks for a snack??!! He about missed the birth. I was trying to wait but it was hard. They were about to break my water when he came in wondering why he had been paged. The midwife told him I was complete and ready to push! He was really surprised as we all were. The bed did not get broken down and the midwife just sat by my feet, the baby things were getting set up as I pushed. It was all a bit frantic at the end. They broke my water since it was bulging and it was such a relief. A few minutes and pushes later my feet started to go numb. lol... great timing. I was pushing sitting up in the bed pulling my legs toward myself almost in a full squat position. I just pushed when I felt like it and no one counted. I just wanted everyone to be quiet and let me do my thing. About the time he was crowning suddenly my whole right leg was numb so the nurse had to hold it for me. I was partially numb when he came out. I could feel on my left side but not my right which made it interesting when he crowned! I did good though and didn't push when they said to wait so he could ease out. Its hard to just breath and not push, but well worth it when i had NO tears or stitches! I had some skid marks but they are minor. After he came out i was hemorrhaging badly and the midwife was pushing on my tummy and put her hand up to get some stuck placenta out. I was more than glad the epidural was working at this point since I could only feel the pressure and that was bad enough! They also gave me a whole bag of pitocin on fast flow to help stop the bleeding. Eventually they got it under control but I was in the labor room for a while to make sure I was okay. I didn't mind and just snuggled my baby and enjoyed looking at him. Finally after an hour I let him get weighed and measured since Cory wanted to be able to tell his Mom the stats. We finally got to the recovery room at 2:30 am.

The first night Preston had to go get warmed for a few hours because he couldn't get his temperature up on his own, even snuggling skin to skin with me for 45 minutes didn't help. He also coughed up a lot of fluid and blood ( mine not his.. i know, ewww!) the first day or so. Other than that he is just perfect! He seems so small to me. He lost a pound by the time we left the hospital so i have a little 7 pounder now. I am sure he will fatten right up with my milk which just came in this evening. He likes to nurse, and gives my uterus lots of contractions from it!! I guess its good though because it helps the bleeding lessen and the uterus to go down in size quicker.

I am doing okay except having some trouble with my anemia and trying to not pass out all day. I was really nauseous and dizzy at the hospital and my iron levels dropped from losing blood with the birth so they kept me an extra day. The levels didn't go down again this last day so that is good. I still feel really yucky and like I am going to pass out most of the time. I hope it passes soon, I have never felt so out of it after a birth!

Here is a slid show with some pictures of our new little man!

Another day....

We went swimming yesterday, as our last family activity with only two kids. From now on we will be officially out numbered. You should have seen the looks people were giving me. What? They never saw a full term pregnant woman at the pool? Good times.

So this morning I saw my midwife and am happy to report that I am dilated to a 3 and 70% effaced. I was really glad to hear that my body is doing something! She stripped my membranes and ever since i have been really crampy. I tried to talk to her about not doing the full on induction tomorrow and just seeing if i could go into labor. She changed the subject and just told me to come back again later this evening to get my membranes stripped again. Then she called up to the hospital and talked to the midwife there and then sent me up there for this procedure to help turn the baby from the posterior position. So I went up there and they used a rebozo technique where they basically have you go into different positions and try to shake the baby lose so they will reposition properly. Its kind of weird, but really relaxing and felt good actually. They got him to move a bit but not all the way. She told me they would work on it some more while i was in labor. I am left wondering what happens if i don't go into labor, do i have to show up for the induction tomorrow then? She never even let me talk about waiting.

For those that want to know

Still haven't had the baby, and I am not in labor. In fact I think he would stay in there until September if the Dr's would let him!! I am 41 weeks pregnant today. I cant believe it! I have an appointment tomorrow morning to check on everything and strip my membranes. If that doesn't jump start labor then i will be induced later this week. Originally they wanted to do this wed morning, but I am going to see if they can move it to Friday so that it works better with Cory's work schedule. I feel like if we are inducing we might as well make it convenient. Its only two more days so I think if my NST and BPP ( non stress test and bio physical profile) look okay then they should be okay with it.

Okay off to wash everything again! I keep having all the kids clothes and things clean in case i go into labor, and then i keep NOT going into labor. Today is Cory's day off and for sure its the last one before baby so I plan on it being a productive day with lots of laundry and cleaning.

Come on out baby!

So i cant sleep.. Its officially august now, just after midnight. I really thought he would have arrived before August. Nine months ago when I was freshly pregnant and only about 6-7 weeks along I was talking to my sister Thora. She was telling me about a dream that she had where I had a baby in August. The interesting thing was that I had not told my family I was pregnant yet. So then I told her that in fact I was pregnant but actually due the end of July. She then said that i would have the baby in August so that she could prophetic. Well I guess she wins. Its august... so anytime now baby you can come on out!!

After all the pre labor like symptoms of yesterday, today has been uneventful. No really contractions going on, and still no mucus plug or show or any kind. My back and stomach are sore from yesterdays bouts of false labor but that's it.

I am getting really anxious. I am starting to worry that he will die in there and i will never forgive myself for not inducing sooner. Or that he is going to have such a fat head that he wont descend. Or when i am feeling really irrational that even with induction my body wont go into labor and i have to have the dreaded c-section anyways. All the what if's are driving me ( and Cory because he has to listen to me) crazy.

Today would be a good day to have the baby. Cory only has 2 days paid to take off. Since his weekly days off are Sunday and Monday we really wanted to have the baby on Friday or Saturday so that he can have 4 days off in a row to be at my labor ( which will most likely be 2 days!! lol) and two days to be with the boys until i am released from the hospital. Of course knowing this i am sure the baby will arrive on Tuesday, the least opportune time.

Ugh i wish i could sleep. I don't want to take an Ativan to sleep because you are not supposed to take it within a couple days of having the baby because it could make the baby's lungs not work as well at birth. They say i am on such a small dose it could be fine... but I worry about it and so i don't want to take it. So that means i have not taken it in two weeks because i keep thinking he is coming.. and he keeps not coming.

okay i think that is enough of my sad pathetic 10 month pregnant woman whining for the night. Thank you all for your thoughts, comments, and support!
